Special Pro-Development Issue!
Long have many of us in Duluth endured the label: "anti-development."
We have been called "anti" if we opposed big-box retail stores and
sprawl sounding the death-knell of our locally owned and downtown
businesses. We have been called "anti" if we didn't want our historic
buildings demolished. We have been called "anti" if we pointed out
that a clean environment and preserved green spaces can in today's
world be leveraged as strong economic tools.
Yet, we are by and large a group of people who wholeheartedly favor
many development projects. This issue of "Common Sense" focuses on a
few of the many "smart growth" projects underway or proposed in
Duluth-the kinds of projects that do not fray the fabric of our
community and our economic prospects but instead strengthen them.
(Boxed-in quote) "Money Magazine's 'Best Places to Live' ...chose
cities and towns that successfully managed growth. Cities that limit
sprawl, preserve open space, and maintain compact, walkable
neighborhoods are not only the best places to live, according to the
editors, but they are the places most likely to prosper in the
future. By protecting and enhancing their unique aspects and quality
of life, these cities will continue to attract skilled workers and
people who want to invest in homes and start new businesses." Stacy
Mitchell, from "Defending Main Street."
