Habitat for Humanity: Building Homes for a Stronger Community
By Lisa Cerri, Director of Volunteer Services, Habitat for Humanity - Duluth
We've all heard about the housing crunch! We've got hundreds of college
students housed at the Edgewater Hotel due to lack of housing.
Hundreds of renters with no place to go. And try to find a house for sale in
a reasonable price range!
Lots of programs in Duluth seek to address this housing
crisis. Habitat for Humanity-Duluth goes one quantum leap further by
actually building homes! We are making a direct impact on the number
of homes available, creating home-ownership, building community, and
strengthening neighborhoods. Our plans are to build eight to ten homes
per year for the next couple years.
We could use a hand! Right now we're working on completing four homes
in west Duluth (Gary New Duluth on Commonwealth in front of Stowe
Elementary School, to be exact). Our hours are Monday - Saturday 8 am
to 4:30 pm. We're building right through the winter!
So, you can swing by after work and vent all that pent-up frustration
or just enjoy being outside doing something truly "constructive."
There are also countless opportunities to do non-construction
volunteer work for Habit.
